KUNST HEUTE
Stumbling and Clearing. A Forest Experiment
Exhibition with Judith Zander & Sven Gatter as part of KUNST HEUTE
Opening: September 27, 5 pm with an artist talk
Duration: September 28 – November 1, 2025, daily 2–5 pm
As part of KUNST HEUTE, Künstlerhaus Lukas presents the interdisciplinary project Stumbling and Clearing. A Forest Experiment, highlighting the collaboration between writer Judith Zander and photographer Sven Gatter. The exhibition features a selection of analogue color photographs and lyrical short prose created during a joint residency in the former home of Günter de Bruyn in Brandenburg.
At its core, the project explores the forest as a space of experience—between retreat and reflection, nature observation and cultural interpretation. While Gatter’s photographs open up the lower vegetation layer as a visually poetic terrain, Zander’s texts expand this perspective through linguistic-acoustic excursions. An audio installation makes the texts audible within the exhibition, weaving them together with the photographic works into a dense, atmospheric narrative.
The literary-artistic collaboration will be further explored in a public reading on October 3, 2025, at 7 pm with Judith Zander, where visitors can experience additional texts from the project and engage in conversation with the author.

History
The Künstlerhaus Lukas is one of the oldest artists' residencies in Germany. In 1894, the impressive country house was built by landscape painter Paul Müller-Kaempff (1861–1941) as a private painting school called “St. Lucas.” It primarily served as a workspace for female artists, as women at that time were still barred from attending art academies.
